My Neighbor Gave Me These Strange Fruits—Does Anyone Know What They Are?


At first glance, the strange black fruits in the photograph almost look like something from another planet.


They have dark, hard shells, pointed projections, and such an unusual shape that it's difficult to imagine there's anything edible hiding inside. If someone handed you a plastic bag full of them without any explanation, you might reasonably stare at them and think:


What exactly are these—and how are you supposed to eat them?


The fruits shown appear to be water caltrops, aquatic fruits from the genus Trapa. Depending on the species and region, they can also be called water chestnuts, buffalo nuts, bat nuts, devil's nuts, or singhara.


And here's the surprising part: beneath that intimidating shell is a pale, starchy kernel that has been eaten traditionally in parts of Asia and other regions for generations.


But there's an important precaution before you start cracking one open.


Don't simply wash an unidentified freshwater fruit and bite into it raw.


Proper identification, origin, handling, and cooking all matter when you're dealing with unfamiliar aquatic foods.


What Are Those Strange Horned Fruits?


Water caltrops are aquatic plants that grow in freshwater environments such as ponds, lakes, and slow-moving waterways.


Their fruits develop with a hard exterior and distinctive pointed projections. Depending on the species, the fruit can have two, three, or four prominent projections, giving it an almost prehistoric appearance.


That's where many of its unusual common names come from.


You may encounter names such as:


Water caltrop

Horned water chestnut

Buffalo nut

Bat nut

Devil's nut

Singhara


The terminology can get confusing because common names vary significantly between countries and regions.


The botanical genus, however, is ** Trapa **.


Why Do Water Caltrops Have Those Strange Horns?


The unusual shape isn't simply there to make the fruit look bizarre.


The hard exterior and projections are part of the fruit's natural structure and reproductive biology. The shell protects the seed inside while the fruit interacts with its aquatic environment.


For us, though, those pointed projections create an obvious challenge:


This isn't a fruit you can peel like a banana or bite into like an apple.


The outer covering can be hard and woody, so the edible portion has to be accessed carefully.
