In fact, if you uncovered something like it while digging in the forest, your first instinct might be to back away—especially if it appeared to be growing inside or beside an old underground nest.


That reaction is understandable.


But some unusual underground structures associated with abandoned termite nests have a fascinating connection to fungi traditionally valued in parts of Asia. One of the best-known names associated with them is Xylaria nigripes, a medicinal fungus commonly called Wulingshen in China.


And this is where the story becomes much more interesting.


For generations, preparations associated with this fungus have been used in traditional medicine, particularly for complaints involving sleep and the nervous system. Modern scientists are now investigating its chemistry, antioxidant activity, neuroprotective potential, and other biological effects.


The results are intriguing—but there is an important distinction to make: traditional use and promising laboratory research are not the same thing as proof that a wild fungus can treat disease.

What Is Xylaria nigripes?


Xylaria nigripes is a fungus belonging to the Xylariaceae family and the broader group of ascomycete fungi. It has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine, where it is often associated with the name Wulingshen.


Its appearance can be rather unremarkable—or even slightly unsettling.


Unlike the colorful mushrooms people often imagine when they hear the word “fungus,” Wulingshen is associated with large, dark underground structures called sclerotia.


A sclerotium is essentially a hardened mass of fungal tissue that can help a fungus survive difficult environmental conditions.


And here comes the surprising part.


The “Nest” Connection Is Real
